National clinical guidelines for dementia

Funded by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) Cognitive Decline Partnership Centre (CDPC)

Developed by Flinders University project leads Professor Maria Crotty and Associate Professor Craig Whitehead with Associate Professor Kate Laver and Dr Suzanne Dyer, Australia’s first Clinical Practice Guidelines and principles of care for people with dementia were released in 2016.

Clinical guidelines for dementia

These Guidelines provide health professionals and carers with recommendations for care that reflect current evidence on best practice dementia care. The 109 recommendations are outlined in the Clinical practice guidelines and principles of care for people with dementia: Recommendations

Consumer companion guide

The research team have also developed a guide to the National clinical guidelines for dementia for members of the public – Diagnosis, treatment and care for people with dementia: A consumer companion guide

Care worker training course

The Dementia Care Worker Training Course (MOOC) is a free online course that has been specifically developed for care workers working in residential aged care facilities to:

  • help improve understanding of the Clinical Practice Guidelines and Principles of Care for People with Dementia
  • provide practical ideas for how recommendations can be implemented in the workplace
