This stimulating two-day workshop was co-convened by Dr Agnieszka Sobocinska (Monash University), Professor Melanie Oppenheimer (Flinders University), and Professor David Lowe (Deakin University).
The workshop was framed around two key objectives:
- To identify and analyse specific ‘cultures’ of humanitarianism and international development and trace them across time and space.
- To explore and critically examine innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the history of foreign aid.
Professor Melanie Oppenheimer presented a paper titled: ‘Resilient Humanitarianism? The League of Red Cross Societies.’
Professor Susanne Schech presented a paper titled: ‘Development volunteering in the 2010s – emotions and politics of being Australian overseas.’
