Histories and Cultures of Humanitarianism and Foreign Aid – Workshop.

Monash University City Conference Centre, Melbourne, 25-26 July 2019.

This stimulating two-day workshop was co-convened by Dr Agnieszka Sobocinska (Monash University), Professor Melanie Oppenheimer (Flinders University), and Professor David Lowe (Deakin University).

The workshop was framed around two key objectives:

  1. To identify and analyse specific ‘cultures’ of humanitarianism and international development and trace them across time and space.
  2.  To explore and critically examine innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to the history of foreign aid.

Professor Melanie Oppenheimer presented a paper titled: ‘Resilient Humanitarianism? The League of Red Cross Societies.’

Professor Susanne Schech presented a paper titled: ‘Development volunteering in the 2010s – emotions and politics of being Australian overseas.’
