Tonsley
In February 2008, Mitsubishi closed its car manufacturing plant at Tonsley with the loss of the last 1,200 jobs bringing the total job losses created by previous Mitsubishi downsizing to around 3,700. Since then, the SA Government and local government in the southern region of Adelaide have been repositioning economic activity to:
- create a new industry base (Mitsubishi was the largest employer in southern Adelaide at the time, a position now occupied by Flinders University), and
- redeveloping the former car manufacturing plant at Tonsley.
This redevelopment started in 2012 and Flinders Engineering moved to Tonsley in 2015 although we still teach some topics at Bedford Park. Tonsley as an innovative education and industry precinct is thriving and is rapidly expanding with more people working at Tonsley than when it was making cars. More information about Flinders at Tonsley can be found here and a good overview of the Tonsley precinct can be found at https://tonsley.com.au.
