BEADS staff and students coordinate and teach into a variety of fascinating and relevant topics at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Examples include:<\/span><\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Earth\u00a0and Environmental Sciences <\/b>(EASC1101):<\/p>\n

The topic discusses the basic geology that underpins the Earth’s make up (rocks, minerals, plate tectonics) and the concept of a ‘restless’ earth by way of examples including earthquakes, volcanoes, avalanches, landslides, floods and storm surges as well as other natural disasters. \u00a0The movement of water on Earth between the land, ocean and atmosphere is discussed, and its importance to the environment is detailed.<\/p>\n

All about using satellites to observe Earth using digital visible, infrared and Radar imagery at all kinds of resolutions; and how we use computers to extract information from that imagery.<\/p>\n

This topic concentrates on the geological and oceanographic processes operative on the inner shelf-nearshore and beach environments. We will also explore the mechanisms responsible for sea-level change and implications to coastal processes worldwide and in Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n

This topic provides students with opportunities for field investigations in local settings in which key measurements and other data will be collected relevant to environmental issues. Students will be introduced to and trained in the use of appropriate field equipment and relevant workplace health and safety procedures.<\/p>\n

This topic provides an overview of Australian and international coastal environments. The formation, ecology, geomorphology, dynamics and evolution of the major coastal landforms including surfzones, beaches, coastal barriers, dunes, deltas, estuaries and rocky coasts will be examined.<\/p>\n

This topic will focus on the formation and evolution of the Australian continent over geological time, as revealed by the fossil and rock records. Students will be given the opportunity to relate classical geologic principles to the understanding of the main processes, modern and ancient, that contributed to the development of Australia.<\/p>\n

All about using sensors (lasers, cameras, thermal scanners, hyperspectral sensors, etc.) to measure the landscape from drones and aircraft; and how computers are used to extract useful information from the collected data, including 3D and 4D measurements of objects above and below water.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
